Applications are invited for the post of Specialist Biomedical Scientist rotating through Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

The department is investing in a wide range of equipment. We have recently replaced our coagulation platform, are currently replacing our blood grouping analysers and scheduled to review our FBC and haematinics equipment in the coming year. We are updating product storage, thawing and temperature monitoring equipment on both sites as well as developing a new LIMs system which will be fully integrated into the Trust’s clinical system. We are currently working towards UKAS accreditation. Haematology in Gloucestershire really is a stimulating place to work.

Gloucestershire Hospitals Foundation Trust provides a countywide Haematology and Transfusion services across two major sites at Cheltenham General and Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. Both provide 24/7 service with specialisms rationalised across sites.

We are one of the largest hospital trusts in the country providing high quality acute elective and specialist care for a population of more than 850,000 people. This incorporates specialist services, including haematological malignancies, for neighbouring counties and we have facilities for autologous stem cell transplantation. We support Clinical Immunology with an Immunology laboratory within the management structure of Haematology. Our Transfusion Department performs a wide repertoire of tests on site and uses over 12,000 red cells and 1,500 platelets per annum. Overall the department processes approximately 78,000 requests and 1.5 million tests per annum.

We are looking for an HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with post registration experience in Haematology and Blood Transfusion. The successful candidate will work at both Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General on a rotational basis. There is a regular, free bus service between the two sites.

Both sites offer a 24 hour service and participation in extended working day and overnight working is required. We currently pay a supplementary payment for out of hours working above the normal Agenda for Change rates (subject to ongoing approval).

Less experienced candidates with post registration experience in Haematology will be considered for band 5 positions

We pride ourselves on the quality of our service and investment in our staff. The Pathology Department in Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has a strong and enviable track record as a centre of excellence for training and development and promotes coaching and mentoring opportunities to support staff development, including service improvement training via the Gloucestershire Safety and Quality Improvement Academy which is supported through completion of local improvement projects. We are also developing a new approach to talent management to enable staff to gain skills and experience to accelerate their progression within the Department and/or career.

We also have a great team of staff who are a very social group. Recent outings include skittles evenings, ten pin bowling, rounders, weekend walks, tubing and, for the less energetic, a picnic in the park to celebrate Biomedical Science Day.

Applicants must be HCPC registered.
