Department of Blood Science: Clinical Chemistry

West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust provides healthcare services to a population of approximately half a million people in West Hertfordshire and the surrounding area. The Trust also provides a range of more specialist services to a wider population, serving residents of North London, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and East Hertfordshire. As an employer of over 4000 people we are one of the biggest employers in the area and see around a million patients each year.

The laboratory is currently moving towards full multidisciplinary working and as such you would be trained in all areas of the laboratory, although the majority of your time will be spent in relevent section of the post you apply for. You will work in rotation with other staff in all sections of the laboratory, namely; Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology. You must be keen to embrace new ways of working and develop your knowledge and skills.

The ideal candidates will be Registered Biomedical Scientists with the HCPC, have a good understanding of the role of the Blood science departments and be motivated to gain specialist competencies in order to fully contribute to the 24/7 service. Consideration for this post will also be given to a candidate who has completed their IBMS Registration Portfolio and can demonstrate that they are awaiting portfolio verification.

There is a full 24/7 hour acute service at Watford and a Monday to Friday non urgent service being provided at Hemel Hempstead. Candidates will be expected to work the shift patterns on both sites and within their contracted hours.

The Department uses the Clinisys Winpath Laboratory Information system.

Clinical Biochemistry is currently equipped with Roche and also Siemens Centaur analyzers. There are also Protein and Chromatography sections at the Hemel site. A current refresh program is in progress with new equipment being installed on both sites.
