The Royal Surrey County Hospital is seeking to appoint an enthusiast and experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join a dynamic and friendly team dedicated to the provision of a high quality screening service for the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Hub located in bespoke premises on the Surrey Research Park, Guildford. The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme provides bowel Cancer Screening in England and the Southern Hub serves a population of 15.0 million in the South of England performing around 850,000 tests per year.

The Hub invites all 60-74 years olds within its population to be screened using the faecal occult blood test. It provides analytical and helpline services and liaises with 18 screening centres in their provision of colonoscopy investigation for all participants with positive screening results. Our screening services continue to grow to include a new flexible sigmoidoscopy (Bowel scope) screening programme for all 55 year olds. The hub has a research team who lead and contribute to a variety of national and international projects, many in collaboration with major UK universities.

The Hub is hosted by the Royal Surrey County Hospital and operates as a specialist service of Berkshire and Surrey pathology Services. (BSPS)

This unique and exciting opportunity has arisen as the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme in England will be implementing the automated Faecal Immunochemical test (FIT) to replace the current manual guaiac faecal occult blood test (gFOB) later this year. This is a new position to support both the implementation and then running of the FIT laboratory. You will work with the Laboratory and Quality Lead as a team of 3 state registered biomedical scientists to provide leadership and scientific support to the screening officer staff in the laboratory. Part of your role will also include working with the Laboratory and Quality Lead to ensure all the appropriate quality issues are addressed within the department to meet the programme quality assurance standards and UKAS accreditation standards using the Quality management system provided by Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services.
