A vacancy has arisen in the Blood Sciences Department at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust for a State Registered, Specialist Biomedical Scientist based in the Haematology and Transfusion laboratory on our Furness General Hospital site in the South Lakes region of Cumbria.

You will be required to participate in a 10 person 24/7 rota for which a recruitment and retention premium is currently paid (please note this is reviewed on a yearly basis and may not continue indefinitely).

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust is composed of 3 main hospital sites; Royal Lancaster Infirmary, Furness General Hospital and Westmorland General Hospital covering a wide geographical area encompassing North Lancashire and South Cumbria.

Barrow-in-Furness and the surrounding area is a beautiful place in which to live and work. Barrow is a market town, with the local area offering secluded villages and coastal properties to choose from and a strong emerging local economy offering diverse opportunities. The location allows easy access to the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and Morecambe Bay each offering extensive recreational opportunities. Access to the M6 motorway is only 30 minutes away and rail links with the cities of Manchester and Liverpool within easy reach. The area also benefits from some excellent schools and colleges with numerous apprenticeships available in the area.

This is an interesting and challenging position within a CPA accredited Blood Science laboratory. The Blood Science laboratories across the Trust work closely together to provide an efficient, high quality service utilising common analytical platforms and IT systems provided through a managed service contract with Beckman Coulter UK. Blood Sciences at UHMBT is currently working towards a forthcoming UKAS ISO15189 inspection.

You will be working as part of a dedicated team providing a valuable service to the local population. The department is committed to continuous development and quality improvement and the successful candidate must be equally committed to these principles.

There will be opportunities available for further developing your skills in all aspects of Blood Sciences.

Applications will not be considered from candidates not registered as Biomedical Scientists with the HCPC.

Anyone newly appointed to the trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period (this includes bank staff). This will give the new staff member an opportunity to become familiar with the role and working environment.

Previous applicants need not apply for this role.
